Our HistoryThe Air and waste Management Association originated after a Detroit meeting in 1906 of smoke inspectors from 13 cities in Canada and the United States. During this 3 day meeting the 55 participants decided to form the International Society for the Prevention of Smoke. The first meeting of the ISPS was held in Milwaukee in 1907, thus forming the Organization. Over the years, the name changed to reflect the focus of the times. In 1915, we became the Smoke Prevention Association of America; in 1950, the Air Pollution Control Association. In 1988, we took our present name, the Air & Waste Management Association. The Canadian Prairie and Northern Section (CPANS) was formed in 1987 after a long affiliation with the Pacific Northwest International Section (PNWIS). CPANS is geographically one of the largest sections of the A&WMA, encompassing the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories. CPANS is in the process of amending its Bylaws. For more information, please contact Brad Gilmour at (403) 298-3382. |
